The sun had barely risen when Patrick Sutherland, one of Halpin Wealth’s financial advisers, found himself at Tanunda Pines Golf Club preparing for an unforgettable day. On a cool morning at 6:00 am, Patrick and his team—a group of hockey players who swapped their sticks for golf clubs—embarked on the Cancer Council’s Longest Day Challenge. This gruelling 72-hole golf marathon was dedicated to raising vital funds for cancer research and support.
Reflecting on the day, Patrick shared, “It was far more challenging than I had imagined. What struck me most wasn’t the physical toll but the mental fatigue. Golf is often described as a mental game, and this day really brought that to life.”
A Day of Determination
The team of seven hockey players took their competitive spirit from the field to the golf course, facing the daunting task of completing four rounds of golf. Despite starting strong and completing the first round in record time, unexpected rain, blazing sunshine, and mounting fatigue soon tested the players’ resolve.

“Keeping things interesting was key,” Patrick explained. “We switched up team formats and leaned into the camaraderie and banter to stay motivated. Still, by the third round, the heat and fatigue were getting to all of us.”
The final round was particularly challenging for the golfers. As daylight faded, the team switched to individual play, racing against time to finish before darkness descended.
“It was chaotic at times, with plenty of FORE calls as we tried to speed things up,” Patrick admitted with a laugh. “But we made it just as the sun set, and it’s a day none of us will ever forget.”
Supporting the Cancer Council
The team’s efforts raised an impressive $4,641 for the Cancer Council, with $2,345 coming from Patrick’s personal fundraising. These funds will help advance cancer research and provide crucial support services for those affected by the disease.
“This cause is deeply important to me,” Patrick said. “We all know someone who has been impacted by cancer, and the funds we raised make the challenges of the day more than worth it.”
At Halpin Wealth, we’re proud to support our team members’ passion for community initiatives. Patrick’s efforts align with Halpin’s ongoing partnership with the Cancer Council, led by adviser Lin Carey, who provides pro bono financial planning services to individuals navigating cancer’s challenges.
